UNOH Upsets Aquinas on Penalty Kicks, Will Host WHAC Championship

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - UNOH women's soccer kept their post season alive in dramatic fashion using penalty kicks to take down undefeated No. 8 Aquinas in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Semifinals.

For the second time this season, the two teams played 90 minutes of goalless soccer forcing overtime to decide a winner. The trend continued through the first half of extra time with the game still scoreless. Finally, in the 103rd minute, Vivian Permonen got the ball into the back of the net for just the third goal scored against the Saints all season. It looked like it could be a game winner but just two minutes later, Aquinas answered to even the match at 1-1. After 110 minutes of game time, there was still nothing to seperate the two teams and a trip to the WHAC Championship came down to penalty kicks.

It took almost the entire field roster to determine a winner but, after nine rounds, the Racers came out victorious, 7-6, earning their place in the championship next Saturday.

The other half of the bracket saw No. 4 seed Lawrence Tech upset top seeded Siena Heights in penalty kicks as well, setting up a championship bout at Racer Stadium.

The match will kickoff at 1:00 PM November 11 with the conference's second automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament on the line. The Blue Devils will be looking for their first ever WHAC tournament title while the Racers will try to life the trophy for the first time since 2019.
