Racers Bring Home Win in Curtain Raiser

PORTSMOUTH, OH - A new era began against a new team with a new head coach as Elisha Fry led her Racers to a 3-1 win in their first ever meeting with Shawnee State in Fry's debut at the helm.

UNOH lit the fireworks quickly putting their first shot of the season in the back of the net at the start of the eighth minute. It was the first career goal for Vivian Purmonen, doing the job unassisted. The Bears returned the favor 81 seconds later on their first shot of the season to even the match. However, the Racers were able to tack on one more in the first half.

Lorna Campos connected with Anne Sjolte, a transfer from Jacksonville State, in the 19th minute to put UNOH up 2-1. The Racers locked down, allowing just one shot over the next 26 minutes and held the one goal advantage at the break.

Shawnee State put their first two shots on target to start the second half but it would be their only two. UNOH only managed two of their own, but that was all they needed to finish things off in the 83rd minute. After earning a cornerkick, Patricia Gomez Nogueras put the ball on the mark and found Janne Esther Frauenpreiss in the box making her the third first-time goal scorer of the night.

After giving up a goal on the first shot of her career, Sophia Eisner made three straight saves in her net debut to preserve the win for the Racers.

UNOH will play their home opener Saturday, August 26, as the third of three matches at Racer Field that day. The Racers take on Mt. Vernon Nazarene for the first time since 2016 with kickoff slated for 4:00 PM.
