LIMA, OH - UNOH (12-5-3) hosted the WHAC Semi-Finals against Lawrence Tech (8-8-3) on Saturday, November 6. It was another steller performance as the Racers bagged five goals in the first half en route to a 6-1 victory, advancing the WHAC Finals.
The scoring started in the eighth minute after UNOH earned a free kick following a foul by Lawrence Tech. From about five yards outside the penalty box, Nanna Rosengreen (FR/Aarslev, Denmark) took the keeper on looking for the top corner. The keeper made the two-handed save, but the ball bounced up right in front of the goalie's box and Agnes Stefansdottir (SR/Grenevik, Iceland) headed the ball into an open net. In the 13th minute, Jeweleen Reuille (JR/Fort Wayne, Indiana) sent a deadly cross into the box that found a cutting Patricia Gomez Nogueras (SO/Madrid, Spain). Patri Gomez took one touch to control and then blasted the ball past the keeper from close range. UNOH notched again just two minutes later. This time Reuille kept the ball herself after beating a defender off the dribble on the right wing. From the right side of the box, Reuille put the ball over the keeper with her left foot and slotted in the top corner. The Racers found one more goal in the first half at the 25 minute mark. Alejandra Gomez Nogueras (SO/Madrid, Spain ) sent in a cross from a tight angle on the right wing. The Blue Devils keeper dove to cut off the cross, but deflected the ball right back to Patri Gomez who buried her second of the match. The goal for Lawrence Tech came in the 31st minute off a corner kick that deflected around in front of goal, before being tapped in from point blank range. It was merely consolation, as UNOH held a 4-1 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Ariana Mondiri (SO/Evry, France), the league leader in goals, could not be held off the scoreboard. In the 57th minute, a quick one-two game with Patri Gomez gave Mondiri a one on one with the Blue Devils keeper. The keeper went full stretch and got a hand to the ball, but couldn't keeper it out and the Racers led 5-1. For good measure, the Racers added one more in the 78th minute. Mondiri put the ball between the legs of a defender and found Patri Gomez. Gomez took a step left and sent two defenders right putting the ball over the keeper and under the cross bar for the final 6-1 win.
UNOH outshot Lawrence Tech 25-4 in the match putting 13 on goal while only giving up two.
With the win, UNOH advances to the WHAC Finals match on Saturday, November 13. The other side of the bracket saw regular season champion Aquinas roll through Siena Heights 4-1 so the match will be played at Aquinas. WIth the Saints reaching the championship game, UNOH will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament which will begin with the Opening Round on November 18.
