GRAND RAPIDS, MI - UNOH softball played two dramatically different games in a doubleheader against Cornerstone Saturday afternoon. The Racers took the win in an offensive showdown, 10-8, to start the day but the offense dried up in a low-scoring nightcap as the Golden Eagles swiped game two 3-0.
Both offenses exploded out of the gate as a combined eight runs scored in the first inning with the Racers holding the advantage 5-3. UNOH hit three doubles and two singles for their five while Cornerstone doubled once and singled two times to score their three. The Racers kept pouring it on in the second hitting a lead off single followed by two stolen bases and back-to-back doubles that added two more runs to their total. The Golden Eagles kept fighting back with one in the home second and two in the fourth to make it a 7-6 game heading into the fifth inning. The UNOH offense did enough to bring a run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh while holding off a furious comeback attempt in the final at bat to edge out the win 10-8.
Dani Keighley put together her fourth straight multi-hit game finishing 3-5 on two doubles and a triple driving in two RBI. Tess Denning hit 2-4 with two doubles and two RBI while Holly Alvoid ended 2-3 with three RBI to lead the team. Brenna Cobb continued her hot streak at the dish recording three hits for the fourth time in six games ending the game 3-4.
Lanie Wooten (12-7) earned the win after five and a third innings allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits with five walks and a strikeout. Karsyn McGLothen finished the final inning and two-thirds with two runs on one hits walking two and striking out one.
Game two sat in stark contrast to the opener working through three and a half scoreless innings with just one hit between the teams. The Golden Eagles were the first to break through the stalemate stringing together four hits in the home fourth that scored all three of their runs. The Racers out hit Cornerstone 4-1 the rest of the way but couldn't get a run across to finish off the split.
Dani Keighley and Hailee Edgell both doubled with Edgell finishing 2-3 at the plate.
Karsyn McGlothen (8-7) took the loss after three and a third innings of work that produced three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Lanie Wooten tossed the final two and two-thirds innings allowing just two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
UNOH is back in action Sunday, April 13 with a another doubleheader taking on Aquinas at 12:00 PM.
