Racers Sweep Home Opener Against Taylor

LIMA, OH - UNOH softball blasted two home runs in the first two innings against Taylor en route to a 10-4 win in game one on Saturday. The Racers had to come from behind in game two but used a five-run fourth to take down the Trojans 7-5 for the twinbill sweep in their home opener.

Back-to-back two-out singles put runners in position for Tess Denning in the first and she answered the call going opposite field for a three run homer and 3-0 lead after one. A lead off walk, a sacrifice bunt and a single put runners on the corners for UNOH and they finished off the set up with a successful double steal that scored the first of four in the home second. Anna Ankney followed with a two-run shot to right center field before Dani Keighley rounded out the inning with a two-out, RBI double.

Taylor found some rhythm in the fourth and the fifth scoring four and making it a three-run game, but the Racers answered in the bottom of five to shut down the comeback attempt. Destiny Warren ripped a triple to right center that brought in one and Matilda Newman followed with a RBI ground out to make it 9-4 after five. With two outs in the sixth, UNOH strung together three straight singles to add a tenth before finishing off three of the final four Trojan batters to take the win.

Dani Keighley finished 3-4 with two doubles and one RBI and Tess Denning led with three RBI going 2-4 at the plate. Brenna Cobb finished 2-2 with one RBI, Anna Ankney went 2-3 with two RBI and Hailee Edgell ended 2-4 in game one.

Lanie Wooten (3-2) earned the win after four and a third innings of work allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with four walks and one strikeout. Karsyn McGlothen finished the final two and two-thirds with no runs and no hits while walking three and striking out one.

Taylor got on the board first in game two with UNOH tying in the second and the Trojans answering in the third to lead 2-1 after three and a half innings. The game began to fall apart for Taylor in the home fourth after three straight walks opened the inning and set up a RBI single followed by a wild pitch and another walk to plate the first two of a five run frame. A hit batter, a fielder's choice and two more walks added three more and gave the Racers control 6-2 after four. The Trojans used a double, a single and two errors to get two back in the fifth before UNOH added their final run on a wild pitch in the bottom. Taylor got the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly but couldn't produce enough offense to close the gap giving the Racers a doubleheader sweep in their home opener.

Matilda Newman was the only Racer with multiple hits, her first of the season, finishing 3-4 with one RBI.

Kiya Benschoter (2-1) completed five innings allowing four runs, just one earned, on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Karsyn McGlothen earned her first career save finishing the final two innings allowing one unearned run on one hit.

UNOH will finish the weekend with a doubleheader Sunday against IU-South Bend at 1:00 PM.
