WILLIAMSBURG, KY - On a weather shortened weekend, UNOH softball opened the 2025 season at the Ice-Burg Classic Friday dropping game one to No. 3 Cumberlands, 10-2, before falling in extra innings to (RV) Campbellsville, 2-1, in game two.
Hailee Edgell brought home the first run of the season with a RBI up the middle to start the day, but Cumberlands showed why they're one of the top teams in the country to start the season rattling off five in their first at-bat. An error aided the Racers second run in the top of the second but again the Patriots were too much in the bottom plating four more runs to take a 9-2 lead after two. UNOH managed just two hits in the next three innings before Cumberlands ended the game early with a walkoff single in the fifth to finish the run-rule victory.
Sydney Shaffer and Dani Keighley both logged a multi-hit game with Edgell bringing in the only RBI of the game.
Kiya Benschoter (0-1) threw her third career complete game giving up ten runs on 13 hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Game two of the day was a scoreless pitcher's duel through the regulation seven innings as the two starters scattered a combined 13 hits. All the game's scoring came in extra innings as UNOH struck first in the eighth before Campbellsville tied things up again in the bottom to force a ninth. The Racers were walked off for the second time on opening day with the Tigers ripping a double to left in the home ninth that brought in the game winning run.
Sydney Shaffer and Dani Keighley both went 2-4 in the game with Tess Denning logging the only RBI of the game.
Lanie Wooten (0-1) tossed a nine-inning complete game in her Racer Debut finishing with two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
UNOH will make another trip to Kentucky next weekend for a three-game series against Georgetown Saturday and Sunday February 22-23.
