UNOH Wins Sunday Twinbill Against UM-Dearborn

LIMA, OH - A ten-run first inning fueled a 13-0 win for UNOH (13-12, 2-2) in game one of the day. UM-Dearborn (10-9, 0-2) finally got their bats going in game two but the Racers' offense stayed hot to battle out an 8-5 victory.

 

Game 1: UNOH 13 UMD 0 (5 Innings)

The Wolverines snuck in one hit their first time out but UNOH made quick work of the inning. After back-to-back Racers were walked to lead off the home first, Tess Denning doubled to get the scoring started and the offense came alive. Anna Ankney ripped her second triple of the season down the right field line clearing the bases. The next two batters waved at third strikes but the scoring wasn't finished. Autumn Pelok and Sydney Shaffer lit the fire again with consecutive singles to load the bases. Chloe Goulter emptied the pond with a double off the center field fence and Sidney Unger brought her home with the team's second triple of the inning in the right-center gap. Tess Denning rounded out the frame with her fourth home run of the season giving the Racers ten after one, their biggest inning of the season.

Again UM-Dearborn snuck in a hit their next time up but it would be their last of the game. An error and a fielder's choiced added a UNOH run in the bottom. Chloe Goulter and Sidney Unger combined singles to score one more and put the Racers up 12-0 after two. UNOH would record just two more hits the rest of the game, highlighted by a second Tess Denning dinger in the fourth, giving the Racers the run-rule win in five.

Denning recorded three hits in the game for the first time this season while bagging two home runs for the first time in her career. She finished 3-4 at the dish and matched her career best with four RBI. Chloe Goulter also set a new career mark with her three RBI going a perfect 2-2 at the plate. Sidney Unger and Anna Ankney were also 2-2 with each one bring in two RBI. 

Carlie Hanes (7-5) tossed her eighth complete game of the season adding to her program record with the 14th shutout of her career. Hanes was efficient across the board giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out seven. 

 

Game 2: UNOH 8 UMD 5

The minimum number of batters stepped to the plate in the first inning and a half before UNOH got things going first. Two singles and a walk loaded up the bases for Autumn Pelok who brought in two with a single down the right field line. UNOH blanked Dearborn a third straight time and Zoe Johnson gave the Racers a third run with a RBI single in the bottom of the inning. The Wolverines finally got their first two runs of the day in the fourth and tied the game 3-3 with another in the fifth. Tess Denning was walked to lead off the home fifth and Anna Ankney followed with a single to left. Dani Keighley stepped up and cracked a no-doubter to left center putt the Racers back up 6-3. After retiring the side in the top of the sixth, Anna Ankney and Dani Keighley added two more in the bottom for a 8-3 lead. UM-Dearborn a two out, two-run homer to cut into the lead, but the rally fell short.

Dani Keighley hit a season best 4-4 bringing in four RBI. Autumn Pelok finished with two RBI while Zoe Johnson and Anna Ankney each brought in one. 

Carlie Hanes (8-5) started both halves of a double-header for the first time this season and picked up her second win of the day. Hanes went five innings giving up three runs, two earned, off seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Jaylyn Mullenax earned her second career save after two innings of two-hit ball giving up two runs while striking out two with no walks. 

 

UNOH heads to Livonia next to take on defending WHAC champion (RV) Madonna on Wednesday, March 29.
