Volleyball Shuts Down Defiance, Falls to Cumberlands on Saturday

LIMA, OH - UNOH volleyball hosted a tri-match Saturday with WHAC opponent Defiance and non-conference (RV) Cumberlands. The Racers earned their third straight league victory 3-0 over the Yellow Jackets but fell for the second time this season to the Patriots, 3-0.

UNOH needed extra points to start the day but pushed through 26-24 before finishing 25-22 and 25-16 over Defiance.

Gianna San Filippo led all players with 17 points and 13 kills. San Filippo hit .480 with just one error on 25 swings adding six block assists and a solo. Savanna Reed finished with 18 assists and Madelyn Hampton logged twelve with Bailey Gregory digging eleven times to lead the team.

After Cumberlands also dispatched Defiance 3-0 in the second match of the day, they held off UNOH in match three 25-17, 26-24, and 25-20.

The Racers were led again by Gianna San Filippo who recorded six kills, eight block assists, a solo block and a service ace for twelve points in the match. Abigail Martin finished with a team high nine kills and Shamyria DuBose added seven. 

Savanna Reed had a team best 13 assists while Savanna Reed tallied a double-double with twelve assists and twelve digs. Bailey Gregory led all players defensively with 17 digs.

UNOH followed up their record setting 22 block outing on Wednesday with 21.5 total blocks (37 assists, 3 solo) on Saturday. As a team, the Racers have now racked up 203 total blocks this season, the second most in the country, and 341 block assists, the nation's most. Gianna San Filippo has played a key role in the Racers' success at the net putting together a 133 total block season so far, the nation's best, averaging 1.55 blocks per set putting her third nationally.

 

UNOH will try to win their fourth straight conference match when the host Siena Heights on Wednesday, October 2 at 7:00 PM.
