Volleyball Bags Two Wins on Opening Day

LIMA, OH - UNOH volleyball hosted the first day of the Racer Yellow Jacket Classic to open the season and picked up two straight-set victories over Goshen and Governors State.

The Racers had no trouble taking the first set of the season 25-14 over the Maple Leafs, dispatching of sets two and three 25-16, 25-22. After Goshen swept Governor State in match two, UNOH did the same in match three, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16.

"It was a great start to the season," said head coach Josh Kreiner. "We played really clean today. Anytime your middles can go .315 on 57 swings, it's a good day."

Middle Gianna San Filippo made a splash in her debut racking up ten block assists and 14 kills over the two matches while counterpart Hannah Colquitt hit a blistering .556 with just one error on the day.

Abigail Martin paced the Racers on the pin recording 23 kills and 28.5 points while Aliyah Saylor added 14 and 16.

Savanna Reed finished with 41 assists to lead the team with Bailey Gregory digging a team high 25 times. Madelyn Hampton showed off her versatility bagging 17 digs, 14 assists, three aces and a kill.

As a team, UNOH hit .197 in the two matches with 32 block assists while holding their opponents to -.017.

"We have a few returners in new roles this year. Bailey, Aliyah, Hannah, Abby. They stepped up earlier this spring and it showed today. With them, and a few new pieces, I liked what I saw today. Now, let's get two more tomorrow.

UNOH will host day two of the Racer Yellow Jacket Classic at The Garage on Saturday. Match one will feature the Racers against Brescia at Noon with the Bearcats taking on IU-Northwest at 2:00 PM and UNOH back on for the RedHawks at 4:00 PM.
