(NCAA DIII) Baldwin Wallace
Florida Memorial (FL)
MELBOURNE, FL - UNOH softball began their ten-game Florida trip Thursday afternoon splitting their first two games at the Space Coast Spring Games. The Racers opened the day with a tight 4-3 loss to NCAA DIII Baldwin Wallace but rebounded in game two topping Florida Memorial 5-4.
The Yellow Jackets started the game with three singles and a walk that scored the first run of the day. UNOH was able to work out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the damage to just one run after one. The next nine BW batters went down in order and a sac fly in the third tied the game for the Racers.
The game headed into the fifth still tied 1-1 but the Yellow Jackets came alive putting up three runs in the frame to take a comfortable 4-1 lead. UNOH couldn't answer in the bottom but ripped two singles and a double in the home sixth to get two runs back and make it 4-3 game heading into the final inning. Sydney Shaffer was the final hope for the Racers getting on with a two-out single and stealing her way around to third, but Baldwin Wallace forced a fly out on the final batter to finish off the win.
Sydney Shaffer and Dani Keighley led the team going 2-3 at the dish. Keighley, Anna Ankney and Cecilia Campbell each logged a RBI in the game.
Karsyn McGlothen (2-2) tossed her first complete game of the season to take the loss allowing four runs on six hits walking three and striking out one.
UNOH didn't have a hit in game two until a lead off single in the third started a series of hits that put the Racers up on Florida Memorial. Anna Ankney and Dani Keighley both tripled in the frame to give UNOH a 3-0 lead after three. The Lions kept battling and scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth to take over the lead 4-3 after six. Another lead off single got the Racers started in their final at bat and used a Lion throwing error to plate the tying run. Keighley came through again a triple followed by a Tess Denning single that brought her in for the go ahead run. Florida Memorial was held at bay in the home seventh with the only base runner produced by an error to give UNOH the 5-4 win.
Matilda Newman, Tess Denning, Hailee Edgell and Lanie Wooten all went 2-3 in the game. Dani Keighley finished 2-4 while Anna Ankney brought in two RBI.
Lanie Wooten (4-2) earned the win with her fourth complete game allowing four runs on five hits with a career best six strikeouts and just one walk.
UNOH will open day two in Florida against Fort Lauderdale at 10:00 AM followed by Montreat at 12:15 PM.
