Women's Basketball Loses OT Heartbreaker at Indiana Tech
FORT WAYNE, IN - UNOH women's basketball fell just short of making history Wednesday night as they pushed three-time reigning conference champion Indiana Tech to their limit. The Warriors had to fight back to force overtime where the short-handed Racers ran out of steam falling 72-66.
UNOH trailed almost the entire first half but kept Indiana Tech within reach to trail by just six points heading into halftime, 33-27. The Racers opened the third with a 13-2 run that put them up five and they led continued to lead the entire quarter and outscoring the Warriors 27-17. Both offenses cooled in the final quater combining for just 20 points as the pace of the game slowed. Indiana Tech managed to get back in front for the first time since the start of the third, 60-58, with 1:35 to play, but the Racers banged through a big three-pointer in their next possession to take the lead back, 61-60. With UNOH in control, the Warriors were forced to foul at the end but the door was left open as the Racers split two free throws with just seven seconds left in regulation. After a timeout, Indiana Tech found an open shot that went through with 4.3 seconds on the clock and the Racers couldn't create an opportunity sending the rivalry into overtime for the first time since 2015. With just six Racers participating all night and one fouled out, UNOH ran out of gas late in the game and the overtime period belonged to the Warriors as they outscored UNOH 10-4 to steal the win, 72-66.
Alysia Lawson and Jayci Allen both finished with 19 points on the night. All 19 of Allen's points came in the second half and overtime as she shot 6-8 (75%) from the field, 3-4 from outside, and 4-4 at the charity stripe while pulling down a game high twelve rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Lawson had a tough second half and finished the game 7-23 (30%) from the field with four rebounds and a steal. Olivia Thompson tallied 17 points before fouling out going a perfect 8-8 at the free throw line with four assists and a steal.
