No. 11 Madonna Takes Down UNOH Twice

LIVONIA, MI - UNOH softball wrapped up their toughest six-game stretch of the season Saturday afternoon taking two losses against the WHAC's top team, No. 11 Madonna. The Racers kept the first game tight through four but the Crusaders hung a crooked number in the fifth to open up the game and finish off a 7-2 win. UNOH hung around in the nightcap but another big fifth inning for Madonna was too much to overcome as the Crusaders took the sweep with a 9-5 victory.

Madonna struck first to start the day but the Racers answered quickly in the second. The Crusaders added one in the third before both teams traded runs in the fourth to make it a 3-2 game after four. Finally, the conference's top offense broke through ripping off three doubles in the home fifth to plate three and take control 6-2. Madonna added an insurance run in the sixth but it wasn't needed as UNOH couldn't get their offense going.

Matilda Newman was the only Racer to log multiple hits going 2-3 with one RBI with Brenna Cobb driving in the other run.

Lanie Wooten (9-7) took the loss after four and a third innings of work where she allowed five runs on seven hits with five walks and a strikeout. Karsyn McGlothen finished the final inning and two-thirds with two runs allowed on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

After a scoreless two innings, UNOH broke through in the third for their first lead of the day coming off a sacrifice fly. The excitement was short-lived, however, as Madonna answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. After the Crusaders added on one in the fourth, the Racers used a lead off double to fuel a three hit, two run frame that made it a 3-2 game heading into the home fifth. That is where the things fell apart for UNOH after a lead off error set up a string of five singles and five Madonna runs that made it a 9-3 game. The Racers weren't finished, however, and cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth but they were held at bay in the final frame giving the Crusaders the doubleheader sweep.

Sydney Shaffer led the team going 2-3 with two RBI while Anna Ankney also brought in two runs. Freshman Brenna Cobb put together her best outing of the season finishing a perfect 3-3 at the dish with two doubles and three runs scored.

Karsyn McGlothen (6-6) took the loss after four and two-thirds innings allowing nine runs, just three earned, on ten hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Lanie Wooten tossed the final inning and a third facing the minimum number of batters.

UNOH will look to get back in the win column Sunday, April 6 as they head to Rochester Christian for another WHAC doubleheader.
